I work with a range of people who have issues of self esteem, confidence, anxiety, depression all the way to early childhood trauma or car accidents. I typically use a mixture of Solution Focused therapy, EMDR and Clinical Hypnosis.
Collaboratively, we focus on the issues at hand and explore possible solutions drawing on what has worked in the past and exploring what you want instead of the problem.
EMDR
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's a psychotherapy approach that was originally developed to help individuals suffering from trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR was developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s.
During an EMDR session, the therapist guides the client through a series of bilateral stimulation, which can involve following the therapist's finger movements with their eyes or vibrations on the hands. These bilateral stimulations are believed to mimic the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phase, during which processing of emotional experiences naturally occurs.
The process involves accessing traumatic memories while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. This is done with the aim of reducing the emotional intensity and negative beliefs associated with the traumatic memories, ultimately leading to their integration into the individual's normal memory network in a less distressing manner.
EMDR has been found effective not only for PTSD but also for other conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, and various types of distressing memories. It's important to note that EMDR should be administered by a trained and licensed therapist, as it involves addressing potentially intense emotional material.
SFT
Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a goal-oriented, brief therapeutic approach that focuses on identifying and building upon a client's strengths and resources rather than dwelling on their problems or past difficulties. Developed in the 1980s by Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim Berg, and their colleagues at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, SFT is rooted in the idea that individuals already possess the resources and abilities necessary to create positive change in their lives.
Solution-Focused Therapy has been applied across a wide range of settings and populations, including individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, schools, organizations, and social work. It has been found to be effective for addressing various issues, including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, substance abuse, and behavioural issues.
Clinical Hypnosis
During a Clinical hypnosis session, the trained therapist guides the client into a relaxed state often referred to as a trance. In this state, the client is more open to suggestions and is able to access deeper levels of consciousness to help promote positive changes in thoughts, feelings and behaviours. However, it's important to clarify that hypnosis is not a state of unconsciousness or sleep, but rather a state of heightened focus and relaxation and is very different than stage hypnosis seen at performances.
Clinical hypnosis has been used to treat a wide range of psychological and medical conditions, including anxiety disorders, phobias, chronic pain, insomnia, smoking cessation, weight loss, and irritable bowel syndrome, among others. It is often used as an adjunctive therapy alongside other forms of treatment such as EMDR.
It's important to note that hypnosis is not effective for everyone, and its effectiveness can vary depending on individual factors such as susceptibility to hypnosis, willingness to participate, and the skill of the therapist. Additionally, hypnosis should only be conducted by a trained and licensed therapist who adheres to ethical guidelines and practices.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What is therapy like? Therapy is a process of talking about the issues that you want to work on and change. This process can take place either in person or virtually on a secure and encrypted video platform. Usually in the first session we talk about your background information so that I get to know you and your history, and we set some goals or targets for our work together. The subsequent sessions will be a mixture of discussion and me using interventions such as using EMDR or Clinical Hypnosis. An important part of my approach is that you guide the pace of the work as you are the best expert on you. You don’t need to bring anything other than yourself to therapy and it is best to turn off phones or notifications on your watch while in session to get the most from the session.
How long does therapy take? Therapy does not take a prescribed amount of time and the duration varies depending on individual’s needs and goals. Some people may benefit from short-term therapy focused on specific issues, while others may choose longer-term therapy for ongoing support and personal growth. For someone wanting EMDR on a single event can take 6 to 12 sessions but for someone who has experienced trauma for a longer period such as since childhood, will likely need longer in therapy using EMDR.
How often will we meet? Sessions usually start out once a week or once ever 2 weeks and may end up being once a month, depending on the situation. The frequency may vary depending on the person's needs and goals and sometimes coming in once a month suits the goals.
Do you prescribe medication? Psychologists in Alberta and most psychologists in Canada do not prescribe medication. You will need to see your family doctor or psychiatrist for this. I will work collaboratively with psychiatrists or other healthcare providers who can provide medication management.
How much does therapy cost? I provide a free - 15 minute video consultation. I follow the recommended rate that has been set by the Psychology Association of Alberta (PAA) which is $220 for a clinical hour (50 minutes). If you want a longer session, I also provide a 75 minute session and the rate is $320. Reports, file requests, phone calls, etc… are all prorated based on $220/hour. Payment can be made by Visa, Mastercard, Cash, or e-Transfer and is expected at the start of each session. It is expected you will have a credit card on file for billing purposes in the event of a no-show or short notice cancellation appointment. As of June 1, 2024, I will not be able to accept future bookings if there is an outstanding balance on your account.
Do you accept insurance? It is your responsibility to check into your insurance plan to gather information on coverage. This is not something that I can do since all plans are different. I will provide you with an official receipt after payment, which may be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement. I can direct bill to various insurance companies, with your permission. When you contact your insurance to find out if direct billing is possible, please ask about the amount that is covered in your plan per year. Sometimes therapy expenses can also be put on health spending accounts once insurance has been maxed out, please check with your plan.
Is therapy confidential? Keeping the information you share with me private is one of the main tenets of providing therapy and this is called confidentiality. There are some limits to confidentiality that are universal across the field of psychology and are upheld by legal and ethical guidelines. We will discuss confidentiality and the limits in your first session and I will take the time to make sure you understand the limits before you share your personal information.
What issues do you specialize in? I help people with a variety of issues such as anxiety and depression, grief, trauma from childhood and trauma to accidents. I work with adults (people over 18 year old) and people who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and Veterans/RCMP/Fire and peace officers.
How do I prepare for my 15 minute video consultation? Since we only have 15 minutes, please come to the meeting with a brief summary of your issues/challenges, and perhaps include some goals or thoughts on what you want to work on. You can also ask some questions for me about my therapeutic approach and training and experience with specific conditions or issues. This would also be a good time to bring needing a reduced rate/sliding scale for therapy. Please note that you will need to justify why you need this and that I only accept a limited number of reduced rate people to my active caseload.
What is the Cancellation Policy? Please note that I ask for 48 hours cancellation notice to avoid a cancellation fee of $110. If a no-show occurs or cancellation with less than 24 hours notice is given, the full fee of the service will be charged. I will waive the fee if notice is given and the reason for cancellation is pain or illness.
